Plastic fountains pick up a film after a few weeks — the slick you feel when you run a finger round the rim. Steel does not. This one is 304 stainless, the same grade as a good saucepan, and it wipes clean instead of staining.
3.2 litres, so you refill it twice a week
108oz in the tank. For one cat that is most of a week; for two or three it is every few days. The lid lifts off with a buckle rather than a twist, so refilling does not mean taking the whole thing apart.
Under 20 decibels
Quieter than a fridge. The pump sits in a holder at the bottom of the tank rather than loose on the base, which is what usually causes the rattle in cheaper fountains.
The whole thing goes in the dishwasher
Tray and tank both. Take the pump out first — it detaches by hand, no tools — and the rest goes on the bottom rack.
Two filters, not one
A pre-filter sponge catches fur and grit before the water reaches the activated carbon filter, which is what keeps the water from tasting of the tank. Replace the carbon filter about every two to four weeks depending on how many cats use it.
